Instructors looking for a physical, energizing way to help students recharge and refocus may find value in a Movement Break. This practice incorporates short, mindful movements to release tension and improve alertness, making it ideal for longer classes, online learning, or high-stress periods like midterms or finals.

To implement this activity, follow these steps:

  1. Choose the type of movement.
    • Simple Stretches: Arm raises, neck rolls, seated twists
    • Yoga-inspired poses: Child’s pose, forward fold, or seated cat stretch.
    • Gentle Physical Activity: Shaking out limbs or marching in place
  2. Introduce the activity.
    • “Let’s take a quick break to move our bodies and refresh our minds. Follow along with me.”
  3. Guide students through movements.
    • Demonstrate each movement slowly
    • “Raise your arms overhead.... stretch them out wide... roll your shoulders back.”
  4. Encourage mindfulness during movement.
    • “Notice how your body feels as you stretch. Breathe deeply and relax into the movement.”
  5. Transition back to class
    • “Thank you for taking this moment to care for your body. Let’s dive back into the lesson.”

Some additional benefits of using this activity include boosting energy levels, relieving physical discomfort, and promoting overall well-being.
